New requirements for traceability and reporting of hazardous waste

From 1 November 2020, all companies handling hazardous waste must report recorded data on the waste to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's national waste register. Here's how it affects you.

Extended record-keeping obligation

Until this year, records of hazardous waste have only been kept within each business and only had to be reported if requested by the supervisory authority. An extended record-keeping obligation came into force on 1 August, meaning records must be submitted via the waste register's e-service — or by connecting the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's API solution to your own business system. From 1 November, the change comes into full force.

Businesses affected

Regardless of the type of business, almost everyone produces some form of hazardous waste — electronics, fluorescent tubes, chemicals. It's estimated that the new rule affects over 1 million businesses. The following must report:

Produce hazardous waste · Transport hazardous waste · Receive and handle hazardous waste in collection operations · Treat hazardous waste · Broker or trade in hazardous waste.
