The City of Stockholm's climate goals and requirements for environmental data

The City of Stockholm is one of Sweden's largest public clients in construction and infrastructure. Through its Development Administration, the city drives extensive urban development projects with high demands on sustainability, climate performance and follow-up.

Construction activity within the city accounts for around 20 percent of the city's CO₂ emissions, making construction and civil engineering projects a central part of the climate transition.

Challenges with environmental data in construction projects

Reaching the city's climate goals requires reliable and comparable environmental data from construction work. At the same time, the industry has long been characterized by manual working methods, varying data quality and administratively demanding reporting.

Increasing requirements for climate reporting mean that large amounts of data must be collected from haulage firms, waste facilities, contractors and subcontractors. When data is handled in different systems or manually, there is a risk of errors, duplicated work and poor follow-up. The City of Stockholm saw the need for a shared, standardized and digital way of working.

Digital environmental reporting according to BEAst with Kubicom

In the Norra Djurgårdsstaden project, the city tested a new way of working based on the BEAst standard and automated digital data sharing. Environmental data was shared digitally from haulage firms and waste facilities to construction contractors and on to the project organization, without manual handling at multiple stages.

After successful pilot projects, the City of Stockholm has now procured Kubicom for full operation. The platform enables a unified and structured collection of environmental data according to BEAst, creating a shared digital flow for all parties in the project.

Reduced administration and better traceability

With Kubicom and the BEAst standard, the City of Stockholm has created the conditions for digital and automated collection of environmental data, unified reporting according to industry standard, reduced manual administration at multiple stages, improved data quality and traceability, and better basis for following up on climate goals.
